INSANELY GOOD KWE CAP IN JAKARTA THAT YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY TRY! BEST KWE CAP IN JAKARTA 2021

Soup and other soupy foods are always the comfort foods during the rainy season at least that’s how it goes in Jakarta. We went to Pademangan last night and chanced upon a stall selling kwe cap, a traditional culinary delight from West Borneo that features cylindrically-shaped rice cake (very much like rice noodles) in pork broth, topped with crispy fried pork skin. Yummy!

The place is called Kwe cap Abong, and it is widely known by the locals (just ask where to find kwe cap). The owner said that it had been operating for more than 30 years, which suggests that it was established somewhere in the 80s. Its layout is nowhere near fancy. It is so simple that it only has 4 tables and can only accommodate as many as 16 people. It’s a place where you come, sit, enjoy your food, and tear off.

I ordered the complete set, which included a generous bowl of kwe cap and another bowl of fish balls and tofu stuffed with ground pork (yong tau foo). The soup was savory and rich. A dash of pepper and the sambal complement the dish really well.

The main highlight was definitely the kwe cap itself! Its simmered fried pork skin was probably what mainly carried the dish. The texture was pretty much like braised fish maw. only that this one is pork. And I think you can also request to the owner for crispy pork skin if u don’t like it soft.

The rice cake by itself wasn’t anything special for me, as I am more into rice noodles or vermicelli, but when eaten together with the soup and the pork skin, it tasted somewhat magical!

I would definitely come back again for sure whenever I am around Padamangan. I would, however, go with the a la carte since the complete set was too much for me and the extra bowl wasn’t worth the additional 10k. But then again, if you are curious and want to try their original fish balls and yong tau foo, feel free to do so!

During the dingy and colorless rainy seasons, I implore you to come and eat here, as their kwe cap will surely liven you up and make you go yup yup yup!
